Overview
Affiliate marketing is a performance model where a brand pays partners a commission for each sale they drive, rather than a flat fee. The partner promotes the product with a trackable link, and the brand only pays when a sale happens.
It is the foundation of TikTok Shop. Most shops grow through affiliate creators who earn commission on the orders their content generates.
How it works
A brand sets a commission rate and gives affiliates a way to drive trackable sales (a tagged video, a link, a showcase). The platform attributes each sale and pays the affiliate their cut.
Because the model is pay-for-performance, it scales cleanly: you can add hundreds of affiliates without fixed cost, and your spend tracks your sales.
Why it matters
Affiliate marketing aligns incentives. Creators are motivated to actually sell, and brands only pay for results. On TikTok Shop, where content volume drives GMV, that model is what lets a brand scale reach affordably.
How brands use it
Brands recruit affiliates at volume, set competitive commissions, seed samples, and concentrate support on the affiliates who convert, turning a broad roster into a reliable sales channel.
