Overview
Affiliate commission is the cut a brand pays a creator for each sale that creator drives. It is the primary lever that decides how attractive your offer is to TikTok Shop affiliates, and it comes directly out of each order's margin.
Commission is set as a percentage of the product's sale price and is paid only on attributed, completed orders, so it scales with performance.
How it works
You set a commission rate when you create an affiliate offer in TikTok Shop. When a creator's content drives a sale, TikTok calculates the commission on the order value and pays it to the creator after the order clears its return window.
You can run a single base rate for all affiliates or layer higher 'targeted' rates for specific creators you want to win, which is common when recruiting larger or higher-converting partners.
Why it matters
Commission is the number creators compare across brands. Set it too low and the affiliates you want will promote someone else; set it too high and you erode the margin that makes the channel worth running.
Because commission stacks on top of the platform referral fee, fulfillment, and ad spend, it has to be modeled against your full per-order economics, not chosen in isolation.
Common benchmarks
Where commission usually lands by category on TikTok Shop:
- Beauty & skincare15-25%
- Supplements20-30%
- Home & kitchen10-20%
- Apparel10-20%
- Targeted / hero creators+5-10% above base
These ranges depend on your monthly TikTok Shop GMV tier, ad and sample budget, SKU mix, category, and how aggressively you coach the program. Treat them as a band, not a guarantee.
How brands use it
Brands set a competitive base rate to attract the Open Plan crowd, then offer higher targeted commissions to recruit specific creators with proven conversion or large audiences.
Smart operators model commission against contribution margin so they know the floor below which a sale stops being worth it, then keep rates as high as the math allows to stay competitive for creators.
