Definition

Impressions: The number of times content or an ad is displayed, regardless of whether it was clicked. The top-of-funnel reach metric.

Overview

Impressions are the number of times a piece of content or an ad is displayed, whether or not anyone clicked. It is the top-of-funnel reach metric on TikTok Shop and every other platform.

Impressions count displays, not people. One person who sees a video three times generates three impressions but counts once in reach.

How it works

TikTok counts an impression each time your content or product card is rendered on a screen. Impressions feed every downstream rate: CTR is clicks over impressions, CPM is cost per thousand impressions.

Why it matters

Impressions tell you how much exposure you are getting, but exposure alone does not pay. They are the denominator for the efficiency metrics that actually matter, so they are a means, not an end.

How brands use it

Brands use impressions to size reach and to calculate the rate metrics (CTR, CPM) that reveal whether that reach is productive.
