Overview
A gifted collaboration is a partnership where a brand sends a creator free product in exchange for content, without paying an upfront fee. The product is the compensation, sometimes paired with affiliate commission on any sales.
It contrasts with a paid partnership, where the creator receives a flat fee regardless of sales. Gifting is lower-cost and lower-commitment, which makes it the entry point for most TikTok Shop creator programs.
How it works
A brand identifies fitting creators, sends product samples, and the creator, if they choose, posts content featuring it. On TikTok Shop, gifting is usually combined with an affiliate offer so the creator can also earn commission on sales.
There is no guarantee of a post in pure gifting, which is why brands seed at volume and concentrate follow-up on creators who engage.
Why it matters
Gifting lets a brand seed many creators affordably and let performance decide where to invest further. It is how most TikTok Shop programs generate their first wave of authentic content.
The tradeoff is control: without a fee or contract, posting is optional, so gifting works best at volume with strong product-market fit.
How brands use it
Brands seed samples to a broad, well-targeted set of creators, track who posts and who sells, then move the strongest performers into paid partnerships or higher-commission tiers.
