Overview
Watch time is the total amount of time people spend watching a video. It can be looked at in total (all watch time summed) or as an average per view.
On TikTok it is one of the most important distribution signals. The platform is built to keep people watching, so content that racks up watch time gets shown to more people.
How it works
Watch time combines how many people watch with how long each of them stays. A short video watched fully many times and a longer video watched partway can both generate high total watch time by different routes.
Average watch time per view, and whether viewers rewatch or loop, tell you how gripping the content is beyond raw reach.
Why it matters
Because watch time drives distribution, it is upstream of nearly every other number that matters: more watch time earns more impressions, which drives more clicks, which drives more GMV.
For creator programs, watch time helps explain why one video quietly outperforms another with similar view counts: the algorithm is rewarding the one that held people longer.
How brands use it
Brands study which hooks and edits earn the most watch time, then bake those lessons into creator briefs so more of their affiliate content earns organic distribution instead of stalling.
