Step 1: Clear your watch history
Open TikTok, tap Profile, tap the three-line menu (top right), Settings and privacy, Activity center, Watch history, then tap "Clear." This wipes the list of videos the algorithm uses to recommend similar content.
Step 2: Use TikTok's official 'Refresh your For You feed' button
Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Content preferences, "Refresh your For You feed," then tap Confirm. This is TikTok's native reset option, launched in 2023. It wipes your recommendation weights. Your account, followers, likes, and posts stay intact.
Step 3: Spend 10 minutes marking 'Not interested'
Open the For You tab. For every video that doesn't match the niche you want, long-press, "Not interested." Do this to 30 to 50 videos in a single 10-minute session. Negative signals retrain the algorithm 2 to 3x faster than positive signals alone.
Step 4: Watch niche content to 100% and engage
Search your target niche (e.g. "skincare tutorials," "productivity tips"). Watch 5 to 10 videos all the way through. Like each one, comment on at least 3, and share at least 1 to DMs. The first 30 to 60 minutes after the reset decide what TikTok thinks you're into.
Step 5: Follow 10 accounts in the target niche
Following is the strongest positive signal in TikTok's ranking model. Follow 10 creators in your target niche. Within a few hours, your FYP should pivot. If it hasn't pivoted within 24 hours, repeat steps 3 to 5 the next day.
Looking for creators in your niche?
Hubfluence indexes 4M+ creators across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, filterable by niche, engagement, and GMV, and automates personalized outreach so you don't have to scroll FYP for candidates.
What actually gets reset (and what doesn't)
| Data | Status after reset | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Watch history | Wiped | List of videos you've watched and how long you watched each. |
| Recommendation weights | Wiped | Internal scores the algorithm uses to predict what you'll watch. |
| 'Not interested' flags | Kept | Negative signals persist through a reset. Good, since those are intentional. |
| Following list | Kept | Your follows don't get touched. You still see their content. |
| Followers | Kept | Your follower count and audience stay intact. |
| Likes / saves / downloads | Kept | Past engagement remains but its recommendation weight is reset. |
| Your posted videos | Kept | Nothing you've published is affected by a personal FYP reset. |
| Drafts + saved content | Kept | All drafts, saved sounds, and collections remain untouched. |
5 tactics to retrain FYP faster
The reset is the easy part. The trick is retraining the algorithm so your FYP stays in the new niche long-term.
- Watch 100% of target-niche videos. Completion rate is the strongest positive signal. Don't scroll away halfway.
- Comment on 20% of niche videos. Comments carry 3 to 5x the weight of likes. Even one-word reactions count.
- Share to DMs. One share retrains faster than 10 likes. Signals "valuable enough to pass on."
- Search specific niches, not just topics. Search "vintage film photography tutorials," not "photography." Specific queries train specific clusters.
- Avoid the old niche for 72 hours. Even one video in the old niche can pull your FYP back. Budget 72 hours of pure new-niche engagement.
